Happy National Video Game Day

Okay, so I know this post is a little late. Whoops. I started a new job which is great for me, but also makes writing a little more difficult. No worries though; the posts will get back on track, I promise. So moving on, September 12th was national video game day and to celebrate I thought I share a little bit of my history with video games and my top 5 games which best describe my gameplay. So let’s get started.

I started playing video games at the young, naive age of 5. The first video game I ever played was Mortal Kombat 2 on Playstation. I had seen others play games like my older sisters who owned a Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis, but hadn’t tried playing myself. Lucky for me, I would go to my older friend’s house after school and she introduced me to Mortal Kombat. Once I played with her, I pretty much came obsessed and fairly decent at the game considering my age. I would play with her, I play at the arcade in Boat’N’Net, and at other friends’ house who owned the game as well. For a while it was the only game I ever played because my parents wouldn’t buy me a system. Sad, I know. To try and make up for it, they bought me a Pac-Man and Mrs. Pac-Man plug-in systems when I was 10. You know what I’m talking about. Those little controllers with built in games that you plugged into the T.V. with a red, yellow, and white cord. Yea, that is considered old school now.

I had fun with them for a while and became pro at Pac-Man and Galaga. However, it became a little weary to be able to only play other games when I go to a friend’s house who didn’t always like playing with me because I would when a lot. Guilty. My wish was sort of granted in 6th grade when my mom purchased a used Playstation 2 from someone at work. Later in 10th grade I received a Wii for Christmas which then dancing games took up all my free time. To then finally the system that really got me started, my Xbox 360 in 10th grade. Of course I’ve upgraded to an Xbox One now, but Xbox in general is basically how I started my real gaming and learned from playing online with friends.

I finally had a way of hanging out with my friends from all over without actually having to go their house. I can remember all the times of messing around in Halo and me failing in Call of Duty. One of my first nerdy boyfriends at the time helped me get through Resident Evil 5, which yes I know is a “pretty easy” game, but it was a fun accomplishment for me so don’t judge. Then I started to venture into games for myself, but was constantly calling my friends in a private chat telling them I couldn’t complete the mission to then of course completing it. I remember a time where I was in a Halo game with two of my guy friends and we decided to have a little fun. One friend and me decided to hide from the other and cut him from our chat so he wouldn’t know where to find us. We basically got away with it for like 40 minutes. Just stupid stuff like that always comes to mind when I think of my times on Xbox.

It’s great to think of how video games can really do a lot of great things in life. It brings fun memories, chances of accomplishments or rewards, relieves stress, brings friends together, and more. I do think as a society, we have to play responsibly and remember it is only a game. However, games are great and at the end of the day, they’re not going anywhere. I want to share with you some of the Top 5 games that influenced me somehow in my gaming life.

My Top 5 Games Over My Life

• Mortal Kombat (of course) It was my first video game and I still continue to play it to this day. Kitana is my absolute go-to, but I have also dabbled with Jade, Sindel, Kung Jin, and De’Vorah.
• Grand Theft Auto (specifically IV) Okay so I was definitely the girl that used cheat codes. Who doesn’t? I probably played this game at way too young of an age, but it was so worth it. Stealing cars and jumping off buildings sure entertained me as a kid. Thank you Selena for sharing this game with me.
• Batman Arkham Series (specifically Arkham Origins) Okay so I know Arkham Origins isn’t technically part of the trilogy, but it is my favorite. If I did have to pick from the trilogy, then it would be Arkham Asylum easily. I felt Arkham City had too much going on and a lot of glitches. As far as Arkham Knight goes, I rather not talk about it. However, the series is included in my list not only because Batman is my love, but it was the first entire series I had ever finished on my own.
• Resident Evil (technically have only played 4-6 completely through) The reason for this being on my list regardless of other’s opinions is because this game is responsible for my love of zombies and being able to kill something mindless to relive stress. There are a bunch of other undead games I like to play, but this game is the reason for me even trying other zombie games. When I got my Xbox 360, I was sort out of the loop as far as games to play or getting comfortable with the controller. My boyfriend at the time used Resident Evil 5 to help us get closer and make me more comfortable as a player.
• Dead Space Ha so Dead Space. Here is the thing… I am a wimp, a huge scaredy cat. I will not watch horror shows or movies even though I have been forced in the past. I’m scared of everything and get anxiety so I just choose to not deal with horror or thriller. However, Dead Space, which comes with a warning when people play, does not scare me. Then I realized, most “horror” games don’t affect me. It’s like the one medium of terror that I can actually handle. Go figure. I love Dead Space and how it helped me to at least get over one fear.
