6 Years Later and the Anticipated Sequel to Frozen Releases
After six years, Disney finally released a sequel to their box office hit, Frozen. Some popular Disney movies too way longer to create any sort of sequels with not all being gold mines, but with Frozen’s financial success, it was no surprise they got to work making a sequel. Sequels don’t always do too well, but Disney had been improving their sequel game with Pixar’s Finding Dory doing very well which I did enjoy. Therefore there was definitely much hype and anticipation for Frozen’s sequel. Now before I get into my review after seeing Frozen II, I have to let you guys know that I was not a Frozen fan at all. I did not enjoy the first film that much and thought it was okay, but not worth all the hype it was recieving. I am just being honest and I much prefered Tangled, but Princess and the Frog is my favorite current Disney Princess movie. Now even though I had my problems with Frozen, I still went to see the sequel and I promise my review is not cruel. I will try to make this as spoiler free as possible, but there are a few things I want to mention about the movie that led to my final thoughts. So let’s get into it.
Since I dropped the bomb on you guys about not liking the first Frozen, I think I should start off by saying I enjoyed Frozen II way more that the first and do recommend it to everyone. I usually give my grade at the end of the review, but just so y’all really know how much I’m not being cyncial, my grade is an A-. I am usually very critical when it comes to movies and most movies that I enjoy still only recieve a B from me due to seeing the problems areas that could be improved, which are usually with the storylines. However with Frozen II, I saw many improvements and found it very entertaining.
One of the few things I did enjoy in Frozen was the character Olaf. I definitely wanted to see more of him and he really is the comic relief I enjoyed the most in the film. Lucky for me in the sequel, I saw a lot more of Olaf and his humor did not dissapoint. He had more quips and cute, funny lines which come to find out were mostly improvised. Comedians who can improvise and really let their jokes and vocal capabilities stand out are winners to me, for example, the great Robin Williams. I think it takes very strong comedians to be able to pull off voice acting. It is its own battle all on its own and Josh Gad pulled it off. I don’t want to spoil any jokes, but all I am going to say is Samantha. If you’ve seen the movie, you get what I am saying.
As far as the first Frozen, maybe one of the things that really got on my nerves was the music. Yes I get it, very catchy, Idina and Kristen have great voices, but when songs just keeping playing and playing. Ugh! I just don’t care for music that is deemed good just because it is catchy and yes this is for kids, but there is a huge portfolio of good Disney music that does not get on my nerves. For instance all the music in Tarzan and Mulan or “Be Prepared” sung by Scar in Lion King or most of the music in Princess and the Frog. I really could go on, but you get my point. Other than one verse in Let it Go, I just could not get behind the music in the first Frozen. Sorry not sorry, but just my opinion. Frozen II however, I did not love the music, but it did not get on my nerves. I also really enjoyed Elsa’s climatic song in the end of the movie which I felt really added to the dramatics of the story and the intricacy of the animation details. The animation was good in Frozen, but I feel they still stepped it up more in their animation for the second. So overall the music with the imagery, I found to be more beautiful than annoying. There was one song moment, however in Frozen II which was meant as a comedic moment and I did find it hilarious, but was just a tad dissapointed. There is a moment with Kristoff singing in the woods expressing his feelings for Anna. The creators decided to write the song, but use influences of “Bohemian Rhaposdy” which worked well so I am not complaining. However, I think it would have been a tad funnier if they were able to get the rights to a classic rock song and have Kristoff sing it directly. A very tad thing though that still worked well in the movie.
One last point I want to make about the sequel is Elsa’s love life. After Frozen was released, people made it a huge point begging for Elsa to be gay and to give her a partner. Now for me, I have no issues with gay or straight characters in children or adult content. However, I personally felt like Elsa didn’t need to be with anybody at least for a while. We saw in the first film the importance of family, the love a family can bring, and the power of being independent. Therefore, I didn’t see the need for Anna and Elsa to get matched up. Since Anna is pretty boy crazy, I think Elsa was a good opportunity to show a princess or queen without a man by her side. Also as much as it is important to show equality and diversity to children, I think it is a nother good point to show how one must know and love themself before being with someone else. Elsa has a lot going on with figuring out who she is and being comfortable with herself and her powers, therefore I love the idea of her finding herself before being matched up. There was a lot of demands towards Disney to make Elsa gay so I thought for a moment maybe they will. There is a scene in Frozen II which made me believe “oh is this going to be it”, “will this be the moment”? It did not happen exactly, but it did make me believe there was a possibility in the future. I didn’t think Elsa was ready to have anyone before Frozen II, but by the end of the movie I do think she has found her self more so now I think anything is possible. I definitely would still love her a single, independent woman, but think has reached new heights. Sorry if this got too deep, but since it was such a big deal after the first film, I wanted to address it.
Overall as I said before Frozen is a solid A- enjoyable for all especially families. I enjoyed the film very much and do plan on purchasing the Blu-Ray for my Disney collection. I appreciated them focusing more or Elsa and Anna’s parents giving us more of a backstory to them and what happened. Disney has a history of not even including parents or having both parents alive so the fact Frozen II added the parents to the storyline, I found a huge plus. I did find some of the storyline hard to follow which I only complain because if children are suppose to watch this, then shouldn’t it be more simplified. I don’t know for sure, but with the magic and backstories, sometimes it gets to be a lot to follow. I do anticpate their will be more movies to follow for this series and I will continue to follow.

I totally agree with you on this and was in the fact same boat when I first watched the film. I was average on Frozen, but Frozen II blew me away. I am not sure if it was because I saw it in cinemas, but there is something about watching a movie in theaters that just amplifies everything about the film. I for one think Elsa should just straight up be kept single and leave the relationship to Anna as we saw at the end. I think showing a woman being alone and still going against all odds is a new and better change of pace instead of diving head first into controversy territory such as homosexual relationships. Closing thoughts, I loved the bit with Kristoff singing. It allowed males to relate to the film a bit more in a sense.
